A former pupil of the Latimer Arts College, Kettering, has been awarded his graduation certificate after successfully completing his training at a north Shropshire air base.

Leading Aircraftsman Andrew Byrne, 20, has just completed training as a Flight Operations Assistant on No 1033 Flight Operations Assistants Course at the Central Air Traffic Control School at RAF Shawbury, near Shrewsbury, in Shropshire.

Over an intensive six weeks the students complete the Flight Operations Assistants Ground School training where they learn about weather conditions, flight planning, navigation, aircraft operations, communications and many other operations specific subjects. They then spend four weeks in the air traffic control and operations room simulators where they learn how to work in the air traffic control and operations room environment and are tested on 12 separate occasions.

The 11th week of their course is spent putting their skills into practice on an exercise in field conditions.

As well as completing their trade training, graduates of the course are given the opportunity to gain a civilian accredited apprenticeship in aviation operations on the ground. This consists of a diploma and technical certificate in the aviation environment. The remainder of the qualification and completion of the apprenticeship is achieved through on the job training at their new stations over the next 18 months.

Congratulating the RAF graduating course members on their achievements and presenting them with their certificates of competency at a special ceremony held on August 23 was Wing Commander Andy Hindley, the Officer Commanding Operations and Administration Wing at RAF Shawbury.

Andy previously worked as a footwear and lab technician at Satra Technology Centre and is now posted to RAF Cranwell, in Lincolnshire, home initial officer and aircrew training in the Royal Air Force. Andy’s main interest is in rugby, he played for Kettering Rugby Club’s first team. Andy was joined at his graduation ceremony by his grandparents, Richard and Jean Bryan, and his parents, Kevin and Sue Byrne.
