India, aged 20, was reported missing by her family on January 30 2016, and her body was found the following day. A 51-year-old man has been charged with her murder.
An IPPC spokesman said the investigation was in its early stages and would initially focus on the actions and decisions made by police dealing with the missing persons report made by India’s family.
IPCC Associate Commissioner Guido Liguori said:“My thoughts are with India’s family at this difficult time. We will be undertaking a thorough investigation into how police responded to the concerns for India following her disappearance.”
Northamptonshire Police announced last week that it had made a referral to the IPCC to “ensure transparency in examining police action and responses before and during the search for India Chipchase”.
