There’s a new exercise class in town – but this one doesn’t involve getting sweaty.
Claire Beecroft says laughter yoga is the key to contentment, and is bringing her own brand of laughter yoga to Corby.
She’s hoping to start her own Laughter Club in the town after testing out her skills on workers at the Corby Enterprise Centre.
She learned the art of laughter yoga while living in Edinburgh.
But now she is back in Corby and is sure that what the town needs is a good giggle.
She said: “I realised that it’s better to take a holistic approach to health.
“I always knew that laughter was healthy.
“Having a good belly laugh fills the body with endorphins which act as natural anti-inflammatories and reduce stress.
“It oxygenates the body and the brain.
“But it’s not socially acceptable to laugh loudly in public.
“I first went to a laughter club in Edinburgh a couple of years ago and I loved it.”
Claire then went on to train in laughter yoga and is now qualified to run her own club.
Laughter yoga was started by the laughter guru Dr Madan Kataria, from India, who realised that laughing had many health benefits.
He went on to found a worldwide movement that has spread to 100 countries.
Claire added: “In the classes you learn lots of techniques to invoke fake laughter.
“That then leads to real spontaneous and contagious laughter.
“We also spend 10 minutes or more lying on our backs laughing with our eyes closed.
“It actually feels like a workout.
“It really strengthens your tummy muscles and I can laugh a lot deeper now than when I first started laughter yoga.
“Ten minutes of laughter is like 20 minutes on the treadmill.”
Claire also lives a healthy lifestyle and promotes the use of raw vegan food through her website
