The newest kid on the ice block will take centre stage as Beckworth Emporium opens its festive ice rink next week.

Twelve-year-old ice skater Lucy Hancock, who won gold at the British Solo Dance Championships in June, will officially open the rink at 5pm on Tuesday, November 17.

Lucy first took to the ice when she was invited to a friend’s skating party aged just seven and now trains six days a week in Sheffield under former Dancing on Ice professional Mark Hanretty.

The Mears Ashby rink is now in its sixth year and Lucy can’t wait to share some of her expertise.

She said: “I am really excited to be invited to open the festive ice rink this year and I’m looking forward to passing on some of my skills to the other young people who might want to give skating a try.

“I just want them to know what fun it can be, being out on the ice, and if I can perhaps inspire someone to become a champion themselves one day that would be even better.”

With a total of 520sq m of real ice across its two rinks, visitors can enjoy free blades, skating lessons, wheelchair friendly and parent and toddler sessions and following its popularity last year, more opportunities to try your hand at curling.

The rink is open every day from Saturday, November 14, until Tuesday, January 5 (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day), with opening times varying.

Entry is £12 for adults (15 and over) and £8 for children with discounts available for group bookings and more than 60 per cent of sessions available at half price.
