Huge bridge beams installed as part of Wellingborough's Stanton Cross scheme

These photos show the scale of the bridge beams which form part of the railway bridge at Stanton Cross in Wellingborough.

“The railway bridge installation is an important milestone for the project and we are all now looking forward to taking the next important steps in the progression of Stanton Cross.”

Each of the six bridge beams is 41m long and weigh more than 30 tonnes each.

The beams have taken four months to produce, with manufacturing of the beams beginning last October.

They were then transported from Nottingham to Doncaster, where they were grit blasted to create the required surface finish, ahead of being delivered to the Stanton Cross site in January.

The beams were assembled on site at the weekend and were lifted into position using an 1,100 tonne crane.

There are only three of these cranes in the whole of the UK.

The rail bridge is located to the north of Wellingborough train station.

It is an integral part of the first major road route into Stanton Cross, Route four.

Route Four will run from Midland Road, across the railway and through a new town and country park into the new development.

Wellingborough Council leader Cllr Martin Griffiths said: “Stanton Cross is so important to Wellingborough and the construction of the bridge signals a renaissance for our borough.

“We have other projects in the pipeline, some big some small, that between them will give a huge boost to our local economy and increase the opportunities for our residents.”
