Four fire crews attended the incident at the former BB Auto Garage, next to Allens Motor Services’ old premises, in Arthur Street at about 10.30pm.

About 80 per cent of the side wall of a building which was being renovated had collapsed. The road was closed to traffic while the site was made safe.

Nobody was trapped inside or injured in the incident but “between 10 and 20” residents were told to leave their homes as a precaution due to the close proximity to gas and electric.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to a large commercial brick building where 80 per of the side wall at collapsed.
