Northamptonshire County Council is set to start the next phase of highways works in the area around Northampton Railway Station.
The council has been working on diverting utility infrastructure and, as part of this work, drainage now needs to be relocated.
To allow this to happen, traffic will be restricted in Black Lion Hill to one lane in each direction from the evening of Sunday, July 7. A contra-flow traffic system will then be introduced from Wednesday, July 10.
During this time buses will continue to serve the area but bus stops will be temporarily relocated nearby to allow the work to take place.
Although every effort is being made to minimise the impact of the works it is inevitable that there will be some delays both east and west along the route.
Station users are advised to plan ahead to avoid disruption to their journey. In particular, if travelling from the west, station users should access St Andrew’s Road via Spencer Bridge Road.
Pedestrians will continue to have access to the station form Black Lion Hill and paths will be open for access to the town centre.
Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for strategic infrastructure, economic growth and public protection, said: “The construction programme has been carefully planned by all parties involved to allow works to take place side by side and to minimise disruption to the travelling public and the area.
“This work has been programmed to mainly take place during the school holidays when there is less traffic. Traffic will be managed with temporary traffic lights and this arrangement will be in place until November.
“However, despite all the planning we expect there will be some delays for motorists and we apologise for this inconvenience.”
On Monday, July 22, work will start to remove junction signals and start on the new road layout which will mean a complete closure of the bus gate and bus stops outside the old train station entrance. Nearby, temporary stops will be provided.
Northamptonshire County Council started highways works in the area around Northampton Railway Station in late April when the Black Lion Hill entrance to the train station was closed. From that point forward, vehicle access to the station has been and will continue to be from the entrance off St Andrew’s Road only.
Additional access improvements, including a new left turn from Black Lion Hill into St Andrew’s Road, will be constructed in later phases of the works.
