Talks between a council and a charitable trust to buy a church site have broken down.
Higham Ferrers Town Council and the trustees of Hope Methodist Church have been in negotiations for 15 months about plans for the council to buy the site in Queensway to build a community centre/church.
Earlier consultation by the council about its Community Plan had shown there was support for a community building on the site, but after talks with the trustees about the costs involved it was decided that the current proposal would lead to an increase in council tax.
According to a statement issued by the town council it is “still interested in acquiring the site should alternative ways of meeting the requirements of both parties be found”.
Hope Methodist Church sold its building in Rushden last year and moved to temporary accommodation as part of its vision to build a new church and community centre on the site of the Methodist church in Queensway, Higham Ferrers.
The church and the council had hoped to create a building to be used by everyone.
