A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched in a bid to keep a valuable archive collection in the county.

The Westmorland of Apethorpe Archive is judged to be one of the most important archives in the county.

It contains thousands of records dating from the medieval period up to the 20th century based around a family which lived in Apethorpe Hall.

But the archive, which has been looked after by the county council since the 1950s, is now set to go on sale.

The cost is about £760,000 and if the council cannot raise the funds it will go on the open market.

A fundraising and awareness event on the archive is happening at Apethorpe Hall on May 12.

Cabinet member for customer services Cllr Heather Smith said: “These archives must not be lost from the county.”
