The team from the Northamptonshire Archives and Heritage Service will be going to libraries and museums around the county where people can see items of local interest and ask advice about researching their family or local history.

Some of the events will showcase old photos of the local area in the hope that visitors can help to identify the locations and add their memories to the information the archive service has.

County council deputy leader André Gonzalez de Savage said: “The Northamptonshire Archives and Heritage Service holds an amazing range of fascinating documents, covering all aspects of life in our county.

“You can see documents close up, whether it is an historical map of your area, or an historical will left by an ancestor from the 19th century. You can even see documents signed by Henry VIII or Elizabeth I.

“We want to tell as many people as possible about what is available in the archives, it’s a wonderful way to preserve knowledge of the county for future generations.”

The following roadshows will take place:

Brackley Library, Wednesday 27th July, 10am – 4pm

Central Library, Northampton, Sunday 31st August, 10am – 4pm

Wellingborough Museum, Wednesday 24th August, 10am – 4pm

Corby Library, Wednesday 28th September, 10am – 4pm

Daventry Library, Wednesday 26th October, 10am – 4pm

Wellingborough Library, Wednesday 23rd November,10am – 4pm

The Northamptonshire Archive and Heritage Service has over 800 years of the county’s history, in a purpose-built facility at Wootton Hall Park.

Visitors can ask to see any document free of charge and the archive is open to the public between 9am and 5pm Tuesday to Thursday, between 10am and 4pm on Fridays and between 9am and 4pm on the first Saturday of the month.

People unable to get to the archives at Wootton Hall Park can search the online catalogue of over 800 years of Northamptonshire’s history.

A research service is also available, where heritage officers can investigate the records on your behalf and will send you a report on what they have found.

The Archive and Heritage Service can also produce high quality digital images of most of the documents they have, and there is an online shop.
