During the past 15 months, Oakway Academy in Wellingborough has put PE and school sport at the heart of the school ethos.

Staff say this has had a significant impact on achievement by raising the aspirations and confidence of pupils.

They say children at the school wear their PE kit with pride and the PE curriculum is enhanced by a range of additional sporting activities available to all children in every year group, including over-15 after-school sports clubs.

Other opportunities now embedded in school life include a sports council, which provides a pupil voice for PE and school sport, 72 young leaders supporting lunchtime activities and participation in local and regional sporting events.

The children also take part in the golden mile, a simple health and fitness activity which is accessible to all children regardless of age or ability.

The golden mile is an all year round activity where children and staff can get involved by walking, jogging or running around a golden mile track and recording the number of laps achieved.

This term, three Oakway Academy pupils have reached 100 miles in the golden mile.

It is a phenomenal achievement by these children and congratulations go to Adam Barnett from Year 4, Kenny Nkhwazi in Year 5 and Jayden Brown of Year 6.

The boys said that they love all the sport and PE activities and clubs that they take part in and want to achieve the highest amount of miles that they can.
