Gas leak closes Market Street, Wellingborough

Businesses in Market Street, Wellingborough, were evacuated this afternoon after a gas leak in Barclays Bank.

Police and the Fire Service are at the scene and a cordon has been placed around Market Street, from The Swansgate Centre down to McDonalds.

The incident was reported at about 2.15pm this afternoon (Tuesday, December 4). Staff from businesses in Market Street were evacuated immediately and pedestrians were prevented from using a section of Market Street.

The Telegraph understands the gas leak is at Barclays Bank and the fire service are currently working on the problem.

Some staff were allowed back in to other banks after 3.15pm and building societies in Market Street to cash-up.

The power has now been switched off at some of the buildings in order to allow repair work to be carried out.
