Future looks brighter for Corby's Tata plant

The firm employs 600 at its works in Weldon Road - the last remaining steel manufacturing base in Corby, where at its height, 14,000 people worked in the industry.

Earlier this year the future of the works was said to be under threat after owners Tata announced that they were looking to sell their entire UK business.

Although the firm has since held positive talks with German company ThyssenKrupp, the future of the business was still said to be uncertain.But now, The Guardian has reported that Lord Bhattacharyya, one of the group’s advisers, is reported to have said at a meeting of industry leaders that the company is preparing “major announcements about growth in Tata Steel”.

He said: “Of course we went through some problems as you have read in the press in the last few months but we are now resolving it and we are working with everybody, with the workers, local authorities and government, in order to make sure that Tata produces steel here for the next 10 years at least. We will do that.”

Corby steelworks takes its steel direct by a rail link with Port Talbot in Wales, where thousands are employed by Tata. It then turns the steel into tubes and beams.
