Wicksteed Park has set children a fancy dress challenge as it aims to mark the monarch's 90th birthday with a gathering of 90 regal lookalikes.

The Kettering park’s latest free playday on Wednesday, June 1, will be a celebration of the milestone, with activities including a royal tea party, cake decoration and crown making.

And the organisers are encouraging as many children as possible to go along dressed as Queen Elizabeth II or other members of the royal family in the hope of having one for each year of her reign.

Prizes will be up for grabs for the best costumes.

The park’s free playdays are held throughout the year as part of the park’s drive to encourage children and adults to get out into the fresh air and have fun.

Wicksteed Park was founded in 1921 by Charles Wicksteed, who invented the modern day slide and swing, as part of his vision to inspire and encourage play as part of families’ health and well-being.

The free play event, which will also include traditional games and a straw mountain, will run from 11am to 4pm.

Wicksteed Park’s managing director Alasdair McNee said: “The fact that the Queen is the UK’s longest-reigning monarch and is 90-years-old is something we wanted to celebrate at the park.

“To have children dressing up as the Queen or other members of the royal family will be a fun way to pay tribute to her and help children to understand just how well she has served the country for so long.”
