Free children’s activities will be on offer at Wellingborough market on Saturday as part of the national Love Your Local Market campaign 2017.
From 9am to 2pm on Saturday (May 27), a merry-go-round, bouncy castle and mini cinema showing Disney films will keep youngsters entertained, while adults can get their hands on a free new shape trolley token with a purchase from any stall.
Now in its sixth year, the Love Your Local Market campaign is backed by government and led by the National Association of British Market Authorities, to encourage shoppers back to markets all over the country.
Events and national publicity are designed to celebrate and highlight the importance of markets to the local economy and the community.
Stephen Dunkley from Wellingborough Norse, who manages the market on behalf of the council, said: “We’re delighted to be taking part once again, and we’re running these activities to encourage people to visit the market and discover just how much it has to offer.
“Some of our existing stallholders have traded on the market for over 40 years, so it’s a really important part of the local community.
“We’re always looking to expand the market too, so we’re currently offering three months free trading to any new stallholders.”
High Streets Minister Andrew Percy added: “We have a proud heritage of markets in this country.
“They are a vital part of Britain’s bustling high streets and the heartbeat of communities across the country.”
The market is getting a general facelift thanks to an ongoing regeneration programme, which includes electrical upgrades to stalls, new seating and changing the layout of disabled parking bays to improve safety.
Some stalls have also been moved to create a dedicated events space, which will be available for community groups and charities to use free of charge.
A general market takes place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7.30am to 3pm with stalls ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to home-made pies and hand-crafted gifts.
Anyone looking for something more unusual can visit the bric-a-brac market at the same time on a Tuesday.
Market stalls are covered, have lighting and electricity and measure 6ft by 3ft.
