DC Cathy O’Connor, from the child protection team at Northamptonshire Police, said: “This was a violent, opportunist sexual assault carried out on two girls in their beds.

“The girls were incredibly brave throughout the investigation and are continuing to receive support.”

Following the court case, a spokesman for the NSPCC said: “McCarthy should have been looking after his two young victims.

“Instead he betrayed the trust placed in him and subjected both to horrific sexual abuse.
