Sacks full of Christmas cards have already been dropped off for recycling at a supermarket.
Sainsbury’s in High Street, Burton Latimer, has already collected two large sacks of Christmas cards to be used to power the chain’s Northampton depot since starting the collection on December 27.
Deputy manager Michelle Bale said: “Respect for the environment is one of the company’s values we go by.”
The cards, which can be dropped in a bin at the store front, are burned to provide heat and electricity for the Northampton depot.
Michelle said the scheme, which will operate for about a month, was especially popular with older customers at the store.
She said: “It’s really convenient if they are coming down for their shopping.”
