Rushden's tip remains closed this afternoon (Wednesday) because of huge queues.

County tips have been extremely busy since they re-opened in May, with strict limits on the number of vehicles allowed on-site at one time because of the Covid pandemic.

Almost a month ago Rushden's Northampton Road tip had to shut because of queues on surrounding roads, with people waiting for more than two hours to get into Kettering's tip.

And in today's scorching weather the queues are so long again the two tips were temporarily closed.

A tweet by Northamptonshire County Council earlier today said: "The HWRCs are very busy today and as a result Kettering and Rushden have had to temporarily close to disperse queuing traffic.

"Please consider if your visit is necessary."

A county council spokesman said Kettering's tip has now re-opened, but that the queue is still "very long".

Rushden's tip, however, remains closed but "may re-open if things quieten down later today".
