The annual Crazy Hats walk is returning to Wicksteed Park in Kettering on Sunday, March 20.

While entries have already started to come in, there is still plenty of time for individuals, groups, schools and businesses to sign up for the five-mile walk.

Glennis Hooper, founder of the Wellingborough-based charity which raises money to support breast cancer care at Kettering and Northampton general hospitals, said: “The walk entries are going well.

“It is not hugely high at the moment, but most people leave it until the last minute.

“We are on a par with this time last year.

“But we are not worried about the numbers at the moment, we have learnt not to panic.”

About 2,700 people took part in last year’s walk, which raised about £55,000.

Looking ahead to next month’s walk which starts at 10.30am, Glennis said: “All the plans are going well.

“All the sponsors are on board, including Avon, Weetabix, AO Copy and Weight Watchers.

“And we have had some selfie boards made up for the walk.”
The charity has raised more than £2 million since it was set up in 2002, with much of this money going towards buying new equipment and helping to improve care for patients at the county’s two hospitals.

It has said it will continue raising money for the hospitals, but Glennis said the money from this year’s walk will go towards new premises so the charity can provide a breast cancer centre in Northamptonshire where people can pop in for advice, have a chat or just have somewhere quiet to go.

Speaking to the Northants Telegraph about the plans last month, Glennis said: “We want to create a facility for the people of Northamptonshire for breast cancer support that we have never seen but is so desperately needed.”

She said the dream is to have everything under one roof and where everything is easily accessible for people going through treatment as well as their families.

Entry forms for this year’s walk are available from the charity’s office on the Finedon Road industrial estate in Wellingborough or via its new website at www.crazyhatsbreastcancerappeal.co.uk.
