His wife, Doreen, was jailed for eight years and three months after a jury convicted her of nine charges of offences against children.

Prosecutor Sally Hales QC told the court there had been multiple offences dating back a number of years.

Lewis Tresman, for Joseph Joseph, said the offences occurred when he was a much younger man.

He said: “Mr and Mrs Joseph have been married for nearly 50 years. Given their age, it is likely they will be separated for ever and it could well be Mr Joseph will not see freedom again.”

For Doreen Joseph, Jimmy Vakil said: “It is a more than realistic proposition that she will die in prison.”

He said she suffered from a catalogue of medical conditions.

Jailing Joseph Joseph, Judge Barbara Mensah told him he had been “wicked and vile”.

She described Doreen Joseph’s offences as “cruel, arbitrary and random”.
