Maplefields School in Corby is helping to boost child literacy and improve its pupils’ self-confidence during National Storytelling Week with a little help from man’s best friend.
Danny, a Reading Education Assistance Dog, visits the school to be read to by the children today, Thursday.
The school has pledged its support to the Kennel Club’s Bark and Read Foundation, which funds charities to carry out school visits with dogs which enable pupils to read to their canine companions without the pressure or fear of being judged.
This comes as the latest statistics from the National Literacy Trust revealed only about a quarter of children said they read in their own time and more than one in five children admitted they were embarrassed to be seen reading.
Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko said: “We are thrilled that Maplefields School is supporting child literacy and helping to boost reading levels by arranging for the children to read to Danny the dog.”
