Throwing punches was part of the school day at Manor School this week when former International heavyweight boxer Dermot Gascoyne paid a visit.
Working with students from year eight and nine, Dermot gave an inspirational talk on his journey to becoming an elite athlete and finished with a practical boxing session.
Part of the Sky Sports ‘Living for Sport’ programme, the initiative aims to use sports stars and sports skills to boost confidence, change behaviours, increase attainment and improve life skills.
Dermot boxed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues in his five-year career as a professional and was regularly employed as a sparring partner by Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis, amongst others.
Mrs Linda Brooks, school principal, said: “There’s a sport for everyone and this programme inspires our students to consider alternative sports that they may not have had the chance to participate in before.”
