A 32-year-old man is seriously injured in hospital following a horror smash on the M1 in Northamptonshire last night (Tuesday).

A BMW heading north veered off the carriageway on the smart motorway section between junction 16 at Northampton and junction 17, for the M45, careered down a steep bank and collided with several trees.

The driver, the only occupant in the car, was rushed to the major trauma unit at University Hospital Coventry.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said the incident happened at around 8.30pm. Three lanes were closed while emergency services dealt with the crash.

Investigators from the county's Serious Collison Unit are looking into what caused the grey BMW 330 estate to leave the carriageway and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or have dash-cam footage to contact Northamptonshire's Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615.
