Discount sofa chain DFS is named in a planning application for a new shop unit which could be built in Northfield Avenue, Kettering.

Applicants Northfield Avenue Holdings Ltd want to build the 900 square metre retail unit on land currently earmarked as a service yards between the existing Carpetright and Halfords stores.

Although Northfield Holdings have submitted the application, the firm says in planning documents that the unit is intended for DFS – whose nearest store to Kettering is currently in Northampton.

The applicants say: “The DFS operation also requires co-location with retailers who primarily sell products for the improvement of the home alongside general homewares.

“Accordingly, DFS has identified Belgrave Retail Park as the only location within Kettering that meets their operational requirements.

“The proposed DFS will more likely draw trade from stores and facilities outside of the catchment area.

“This includes the existing DFS store in Northampton but also stores such as SCS and Harveys, also situated in Northampton. In this sense, the proposal will assist in clawing back trade to Kettering and enhance consumer choice.”

The applicants say the new shop will create the equivalent of about ten full-time jobs.

The proposed site is not far from a new Aldi store which is currently under construction.

Northfield Avenue also has planning permission for a 500 square metre store for which no occupier has been named.

The plans were submitted to Kettering Council earlier this month and the authority is expected to make a decision on or before August 31.
