'Unkempt' robber attacks man at Wellingborough cash machine

An 'unkempt' robber wearing odd fluffy socks attacked at man and tried to steal his money at a cash machine in Wellingborough's town centre.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was withdrawing money from the Nationwide ATM in Market Street when the attack took place.

Police are appealing for a Good Samaritan who helped him to come forward after the incident, which took place on August 4 between 5.30pm and 5.50pm.

The robber assaulted the victim and attempted to steal his money and bike but nothing was stolen as he managed to recover his items.

A police spokesman said: "The offender is described as a white man in his early 30s, 5ft 7in with a slim build, light brown short hair and an unkempt full facial beard.

"He was wearing a grey polo shirt, dark blue Hugo Boss jogger shorts with white zips on either side, grey pump trainers and odd fluffy socks - one pink and one white and dark blue striped.

"Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident, in particular a member of the public who helped the man who had been robbed, however left the scene before the officers arrived.

"Anyone with information or who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 20000402654. Or alternatively, if you wish to stay anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."

A 30-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of robbery and a racially-aggravated public order offence.

He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
