A thug who left a woman with a gash on her head after throwing a bottle at a Kettering nightclub has been spared from prison.

Ryan Davies, 20, ran off and then claimed it was self-defence when he was arrested after the incident at The Loft in Dalkeith Place at about 4.15am on January 19, 2019.

The victim, who is in her 20s, was out with friends when Davies started arguing and being aggressive towards a man in her group.

He then threw the weapon - not aiming it at her - but it hit her in the face with such impact it left her with a 6cm laceration on her forehead that required seven stitches.

Yesterday (Tuesday) at Northampton Crown Court, judge Rebecca Crane said: "This has had a huge impact on her.

"She is embarrassed by the scar on her face. She is scared to go out."

Davies, formerly of Melton Street in Kettering, was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm and initially denied it before changing his plea to guilty earlier this year.

His previous convictions cover 21 offences, including robbery and possession of a weapon, and he has previously been jailed.

The court heard Davies, who was supported by his girlfriend and sister in the public gallery, had recently got a job as a warehouse worker and had "turned a corner in his life" having stayed out of trouble since the attack.

Deciding to spare him from an immediate return to prison, judge Rebecca Crane said Davies had potential and that there was a good prospect of rehabilitation.

But she warned him: "Don't come asking for a second opportunity.

"That's what you are getting today."

Davies was sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He must take part in rehabilitation activities, complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay his victim £1,000 in compensation.
