Scared supermarket staff were forced into handing over cash after masked robbers wielding a sledgehammer and a screwdriver burst into their store In Wellingborough.

The crooks forced open the front doors at Heron Foods, in Gold Street, just after closing time and ambushed staff who were emptying a cash machine in the store.

They threatened staff before taking cash and running off towards Eastfield Park.

Northamptonshire Police issued CCTV images of the raid and a spokesman said: "Between 7.55pm and 8.05pm on Wednesday March 4, two males carrying a sledgehammer and screwdriver forced open the front doors of the store as a member of staff emptied the cash machine.

"Once inside, they made threats towards staff before removing a number of money cassettes from the cash machine. The pair ran out of the store, across the car park before turning right onto Gold Street.

"The people or anyone who knows who they are, or anyone who may have seen this incident are asked to call us on 101 quoting reference 20000124585.

"Officers investigating the incident would also like to hear from anyone who may have found the empty money cassettes discarded either in their garden or in the area."
