Shock video shows drivers in Northamptonshire heading WRONG WAY down M1 slip road to beat queues

Dozens of drivers who performed outrageous U-turns on the M1 through Northamptonshire to beat a traffic queue could face prosecution, police say.

Shocking CCTV footage released today shows numerous motorists risking life and limb to avoid a growing motorway queue in the county.

It was recorded just before 9pm on Sunday, July 5, as cars approached a tailback caused by a serious incident at junction 19 of the northbound carriageway.

It shows dozens of drivers at junction 18 near Crick performing illegal u-turns on the motorway and heading the wrong way down a slip road to get off the M1.

At one point a coach is seen reversing back into the motorway in order to complete the tight angled turn into oncoming traffic.

PC Dave Lee from the force’s tactical roads policing unit said: “These people were behaving ridiculously.

“People joining the motorway aren’t expecting other vehicles to be coming towards them.

“These drivers were not only putting their own lives at risk, they were risking the lives of everyone heading down that slip road.”

Officers are now investigating the footage so action can be taken against the drivers who performed the illegal u-turns.
