A Kettering woman who spends her spare time making sure her neighbours don't go hungry had her car broken into by a 'scumbag' overnight.

Kelly Mercer, who runs the Highfield estate food bank, had parked her red Peugeot 206 in a car park in Highfield Road and noticed CDs by her vehicle this morning (Thursday).

She went outside to pick them up - but realised her boot was open and that her car had been broken into.

There was no food intended for the vulnerable left in her car overnight but Kelly said the thief took her Joules wellies, CDs, a tyre pump and even some hand sanitiser.

Kelly, 48, thinks it's possible her car was broken into because the thief thought there was food inside.

She said: "We have been doing this for two years and just in the last two days we have served 200 families - never in my life have we given away so much food.

"Anybody who knows me knows that if we have some food and they want it that they can have it and people often knock on my door to ask.

"It's a real kick in the teeth."

Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident between 6pm last night and 7.15am this morning. It's believed to have happened at about 10.15pm.

The suspect is described as a male wearing a hoodie and between 5ft 3in and 5ft 4in tall.

Kelly, who spent 13 hours on Tuesday picking up food, creating parcels and delivering them, said: "People have been absolutely brilliant. It's just a shame there's some scumbag to do that and spoil it.

"But we will carry on regardless."
