Stunned officers from Northamptonshire's Safer Roads Team branded a rider "reckless" after clocking a bike doing 123mph on a 60mph stretch of road in the county.

Cameras spotted the bike on the single carriageway A605 at Barnwell yesterday (Wednesday) — the same stretch of road where a driver died in a smash in January.

The rider faces an automatic court summons and could be hit with a fine of up to £1,000 and instant disqualification from magistrates.

Bans generally range from a week to 56 days depending on the seriousness of the offence.

A spokesman for the Safer Roads Team said: "The national speed limit applies on single lane carriageways which is 60mph. This rider was caught at more than double the legal limit and needless to say they will be hearing from us very soon with an invitation to attend court to explain their reckless actions."

One woman died and two passengers were seriously injured when their car collided with an HGV on the A605 in January.
