Police have warned that anyone who attempts to fly a drone over the Silverstone circuit during the Grand Prix weekends will face action.

Covid-19 has meant this weekend's race and the second part of the Formula One double-header next weekend are being held behind closed doors, with zero fans instead of the usual 140,000.

Northamptonshire Police warned people not to attend the track and to stay at home to watch the race on TV but this morning officers caught someone attempting to fly a drone over the circuit.

Police commander, Superintendent Chris Hillery, said their activity was "very quickly curtailed".

He said: “Drones are prohibited throughout both the race weekends, in fact the Civil Aviation Authority has imposed a flight restriction for the entirety of the Grand Prix period.

“The circuit is surrounded by police officers and security staff. We will quickly identify and stop anybody attempting to fly a drone to catch a glimpse of the races.

“The F1 Grand Prix is a closed event and the only way to watch the races is from a TV.

“Please enjoy and celebrate the events from home but do not travel to the circuit – you will be stopped and turned away.”

F1 fans can tune in to Sky Sports or Channel 4 to see every session.
