A high-speed police chase following a burglary in Northamptonshire finished with crooks driving a getaway car the wrong way up a motorway during rush hour.

Five men were finally arrested in connection with a break-in at a property in Kettering having been tracked all the way to the outskirts of London.

Officers later found a stash of cannabis plants in the house in Havelock Street, just off Rockingham Road.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "Offenders got into a property in Havelock Street, Kettering, by smashing a ground-floor window between 5.30am and 6am, on Monday morning (September 28).

"They were disturbed and made off but upon searching officers discovered four rooms full of cannabis plants."

Four people aged between 28 and 48 have been arrested and released on bail in connection with the incidents. Another man aged 20 has been released but remains under investigation.

A spokesman for Beds, Cambs & Herts Road Policing Unit said: "We were alerted to a vehicle which had failed to stop following a burglary in Northants.

"The driver went to go north on the southbound M11 carriageway. Tactical contact was made to prevent vehicle going head on with oncoming vehicles and two occupants detained.

"A second vehicle in convoy with the car that failed to stop following the burglary was also stopped using pre-emptive tactics on the M11 just into Essex area. Two people were detained in connection with a burglary offence and the driver was also arrested for drug driving."
