A spokesman for Northants Police has confirmed they attended two incidents reported to them during the evening.

The first call-out was at 9.40pm on Saturday after reports that a 33-year-old man from Wellingborough had spat at door staff at the Wetherspoons pub after being refused entry.

The police spokesman said: "He was detained until officers arrived.

"Due to his state of intoxication, he was taken home by officers and left in the care of his friends.

"Enquiries are ongoing, and the man will be interviewed voluntarily in connection with the two offences of common assault."

And the spokesman added: "The second incident was at about 11.45pm when we received reports of a large fight.

"Two men – aged 19 and 20 – both from Wellingborough, were arrested on suspicion of assault."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told this newspaper: “The Red Well, together with our other pubs in the region, were delighted to welcome staff and customers back on Saturday.

“The day was a great success and it was great to see customers acting so responsibly.

“We acknowledge two incidents outside the pub.

“Our door staff deserve to be treated with respect at all times and we condemn the man for spitting at them.

“The other incident took place outside the pub and was not connected with the pub itself.”
