Shoppers were left horrified this lunchtime after two German Shepherds were left in a boiling hot car this lunchtime (Friday, June 26) while their owner bought some flowers.

While they waited for the emergency services to arrive, people kept watch over the dogs who were in the boot of the blue Land Rover during the hottest part of the day.

A distressing video taken by a shopper shows the dogs barking in the boot at about 1pm. Initially she had believed it was about 25 degrees Celsius outside of the vehicle, but she later checked and it was actually 29 degrees.

The driver eventually returned to his vehicle after having bought some flowers and shouted abuse at the onlookers.

One woman who arrived five minutes before the owner returned to his car said: "The dogs had very obvious signs of heatstroke - excessive panting, glassy eyes, bright red tongue/gums, excessive drooling and one of the dogs has saliva all around its mouth and chest.

"When I explained my concern to the own he said 'it's because they've just been for a walk you f**** idiot!' which is even more concerning as it's common sense to not walk dogs in this heat either.

"I was only stood waiting for five minutes but a few other people had been there for 20 minutes prior and God knows how long the poor dogs were in the car before that.

"The owner tried to argue it wasn't hot today but we were boiling hot just stood waiting so who knows how hot the poor dogs were in the car.

"The owner was very aggressive towards us, swearing excessively.

"He did say he was going to wait in the car for the police to arrive as he didn't think he'd done anything wrong, but refused to get the dogs out of the car.

"He eventually drove off after we begged him to get the poor dogs out the car, while throwing some delightful hand signals our way.

"The police took his reg and that was as far as it went . I just hope he's not stupid enough to do it again for the poor dogs' sake.

"If dogs get heat stroke there's a 50 per cent chance survival rate. I know I wouldn't value some flowers for the garden over my dogs' lives."

Northamptonshire Police have been contacted for comment.
