Northamptonshire Police are looking for someone a little bit Special to bolster their ranks of part-time volunteer officers.

The force is looking to add 30 Special Constables this year to the 200 already in uniform across the county.

Existing Specials hold day-jobs including scientists, students, home makers and teachers, as well as many more.

But they wear the same uniform and carry the same powers as regular police officers, responding to a variety of 999 calls that can range from anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to road traffic collisions, public order events and serious assaults.

The only difference between Specials and regular officers is that the time they give up – a minimum of 16 hours a month – is voluntary.

Chief Officer for Northamptonshire's Special Constabulary, Mike Maywood, said: “We attract Specials from all walks of life and careers, but the one thing that they all have in common is their passion and desire to keep communities safe and give something back.

“For many people who perhaps can’t give up their day jobs or want to get the experience before taking the plunge as a regular officer, being a Special gives them the best of both worlds."

Chief Constable Nick Adderley recently labelled the county's Special Constabulary "unsung heroes" for their work during the Covid-19 crisis.

He said: "When we talk about unsung heroes, how about this ... over one recent weekend 50 of our Special Constables gave their time for free to protect our communities. They completed over 175 tours of duty in support of our regular team.

"The Special Constabulary here at Northamptonshire Police continues to deliver exceptional service and support to the communities of Northants and the regular force. The value they add is remarkable and worth noting, they do all of this for free, no financial reward at all."
