Nearly 1,000 drivers tested in Northamptonshire's summer anti-drink driving campaign

The operation, which was launched in June to coincide with the start of Euro 2016, saw 48 drivers recording alcohol levels above the legal limit. A total of 986 motorists were tested.

A further six drivers tested positive for drugs. In total, 10 drivers were subjected to out drugs tests.

The enforcement activities were carried out by officers from the joint Safer Roads Team – comprising Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, as part of their work to cut the number of collisions on the county’s roads.

The operations were carried out at varying times of day, including both morning and evening periods.

PC Chris Gray, Safer Roads Officer, said: “It is sad to see just how many motorists are still taking a risk with their own lives and the lives of others by getting behind the wheel of a car when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Of the breath tests administered, 177 were carried out following collisions. Drivers are still failing to admit to themselves that alcohol can impair their reactions and driving judgement, and can result in extremely serious collisions.

“Unfortunately, too many people believe alcohol-related collisions are merely something that ‘happens to other people’ and not to them.

“We would like to remind people that breaking drink and drug driving laws is not something that will be tolerated.

“This summer campaign is just part of ongoing engagement and enforcement work we carry out within the community to try to cut the number of collisions taking place on Northamptonshire’s roads.”
