Murder investigation launched as police remain at the scene of an assault in Northampton

A murder investigation has been launched following an incident near the Racecourse in Northampton.

Police and paramedics were called to St George’s Avenue at around 10.50am this morning (June 30).

The police helicopter was also seen hovering over the scene.A man had been seriously assaulted in the area and died a short time after.

A murder investigation launched by the East Midlands Specials Operations Unit Major Crime Team is now underway.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Pete Long, said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation and anyone with any information about what may have happened here is asked to come forward, no matter how small or insignificant you think your information might be.”

St George’s Avenue remains closed as motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area. A large section of the park is also cordoned off.

One resident close to the scene said: "We get ambulances down here often because of the care home, but we suddenly heard one after another and we knew something had happened."

Increased patrols are taking place in the area to reassure local residents.

Police are also appealing for information, dashcam footage or CCTV relating to the incident.
