A man who spat at a police officer in Kettering after he was arrested has been spared from an immediate prison sentence.

Alexandru Mihaila, 28, was stopped on April 14 because officers thought he was drink-driving.

He refused to give a sample of breath, was arrested and was taken to custody to be processed.

But while he was in custody - and at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic - he spat at a police officer.

He later admitted assaulting an emergency worker and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Earlier this month at Northampton Magistrates' Court Mihaila, of North Cape Walk in Corby, was handed an eight-week prison sentence but it was suspended for a year.

He was banned from the roads for two years and must pay compensation of £50.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “None of our police officers come to work to be assaulted or abused.

"It is not ‘part of the job’ and it disgusts us that a very small minority of people think it’s acceptable.

“The way in which Mihaila treated this officer is repulsive and we want to make it crystal clear that will always pursue these type of people as they violate our officers’ right to be safe as they carry out their duty of fighting crime and protecting the public in Northamptonshire.”

Mihaila must also pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £122.
