A 26-year-old man was arrested after he was caught speeding on a motorbike that turned out to be stolen and then assaulting a police officer last night (January 11).

A speeding silver Yamaha Tracer motorbike drew the attention of police officers on patrol last night at around 8pm.

The driver failed to stop for officers, travelling at speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone. The rider eventually stopped in Northwood Road where he attempted to run from officers, punching one of them in the process.

The offender was located a short time later by PD Nala and her handler in Burwood Road.

A26-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving dangerously, failing to stop, going equipped for theft of a motor vehicle and assaulting an emergency worker. He is currently in police custody.

The motorbike ridden by the offender turned out to be stolen in a burglary that took place in December.
