Evil attackers left an 89-year-old man with a fractured eye socket in Kettering.

The victim was knocked unconscious when he was attacked in Thorngate Street, near the junction with Montagu Street, on Wednesday night (August 19).

He remains in hospital where he is recovering after the horrifying incident, which happened between 10pm and 11pm.

But he remembers limited details about what happened and police have launched an investigation to try and find those responsible.

A nearby shopkeeper, who did not want to be named, told this newspaper: "It's terrible that this is happening in this day and age.

"I believe that people are resorting to crimes like these to feed their drug habits. I feel very very sorry for this unfortunate pensioner."

A spokesman for Northants Police said they were not officially linking it to a robbery on a man in his 80s, which happened in nearby Albert Street on Monday night.

They added that officers are "keeping an open mind".

Witnesses or anyone with information about this incident are encouraged to come forward and call Northamptonshire Police on 101.
