Police arrested a 50-year-old man in Kettering for spitting on his hands before touching food in a town centre shop.
Officers were called to Gold Street in the town at lunchtime on Easter Saturday after being alerted to a man using his saliva to clean inside a phone box as well as rubbing his hands over stock in one of the nearby stores.
A Northamptonshire Police spokesman confirmed: "A 50-year-old man was arrested in connection with an offence and has been bailed pending further enquiries."
