A convicted sex offender who lived in Corby for more than six months without telling police where he was has been given a last chance.

Magistrates said Jonathon Key's breach of the sex offender register requirements were so serious they crossed the prison threshold - but suspended the jail term so he could rehabilitate.

The 29-year-old, now of Claremont Road in Rugby, was previously placed on the register for sex offenders, a measure designed to monitor those convicted of a sex crime by keeping tabs on where they are staying, who they are staying with and where they are going to try and prevent future offending. Failing to meet the register's requirements is a crime in itself, punishable by prison.

Key had to notify police of any address where he stayed for seven days or longer.

But he lived in Harlech in Corby for six months until March this year without telling them - far longer than he was allowed to as a convicted sex offender.

He also failed to notify police of an address where he stayed for 12 hours or more where a child was living.

Key, who admitted two charges of breaching notification requirements, was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison suspended for two years with magistrates in Northampton believing "there was value in suspending the sentence to allow the defendant to rehabilitate".

He was ordered to take part in rehabilitation activities and must pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £122.
