Thieves broke into a library and stole hundreds of DVDs before escaping.

The burglary happened sometime overnight on Thursday, April 4, at Kettering Library in Sheep Street.

The thieves stole the library’s entire stock of 800 DVDs and a digital camera, meaning library users could not borrow DVDs for a number of days until the stock was replenished.

The digital camera was used to take photographs of library users who need passport-size photos for their bus passes, and this service was also disrupted for a few days.

A children’s reading event was also cancelled.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: “There was a break-in at Kettering Library on April 4.

“Library staff arriving for work that morning discovered the break-in and called the police.

“The library was therefore closed until around midday to allow police officers to carry out their work.

“Unfortunately around 800 DVDs were stolen so we were unable to offer DVD loans for a small amount of time, we have since obtained replacements from other libraries.”

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
