At 6.30am, police then received a number of calls from the public about a man walking down the M1, near Northampton. As a result, officers detained another suspected illegal immigrant from Sudan.

All four men have been taken into custody and are due to be transferred to an immigration detention centre.

Many lorry drivers suffered long delays in Calais yesterday after a strike by ferry workers and hundreds of migrants trying to reach the UK boarded the vehicles stuck in the traffic.

Immigration minister James Brokenshire said the situation was “hugely regrettable” but law and order around Calais were “the responsibility of the French authorities”.
