A driver who tried to flee the scene of a crash in Rushden was detained by members of the public - before police seized a large amount of drugs from the car.

Officers were in Park Avenue between 6pm and 6.15pm yesterday (Thursday) when a black VW Golf raced past them and down Greenfield Way, where it crashed into a fence.

Those nearby directed the officers to an alleyway as the driver attempted to run away from the crash.

But he was detained by members of the public and officers arrested him on suspicion of driving without a licence or insurance.

And when they searched the car they found a large volume of class A drug.

Officers then arrested him on suspicion of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

A police spokesman said the 19-year-old has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
