Police were called at about 5pm on August 17 when a grey Vauxhall Astra pulled out of a junction and collided with the near side of a white Ford Transit van.

Both cars pulled over but when officers arrived, only the van driver was present as Kupaj ran off. Fortunately nobody was injured.

Kupaj, 34, returned a short time later when officers were still there and was arrested.

He was disqualified from driving at the time, had no insurance and gave a reading of 97mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Kupaj, of The Hague in the Netherlands, was also found in possession of cannabis.

At Northampton Magistrates' Court he admitted all charges facing him and was jailed for 18 weeks.

He was banned from driving for 10 years and will have to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £128.
