A woman who falsely claimed £32,000 worth of benefits after she claimed she was a single parent when she was living with her husband has received a suspended prison sentence.

Sonya Bedford, aged 39, of Ironwood Avenue, Desborough, appeared at Northampton Crown Court after she admitted making dishonest statements to Kettering Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions during a two-year period.

Rachel Law, prosecuting, said the total amount falsely claimed was £32,000.

Recorder Adrian Jack sentenced Bedford to four months in prison, suspended for two years.

A Proceeds of Crime hearing will take place to decide a schedule as to how Bedford will pay the money back.
