A coach driver has been jailed for his part in a crash which killed a motorcyclist.

Neil Watson was 23 years old when he died in October 2012 after the collision in Gretton Brook Road.

Coach driver John East, 66, of Oakham, was jailed for 10 months for causing death by careless driving.

The court heard how he pulled out into Gretton Brook Road while driving a coachload of schoolchildren and gave Neil no chance to avoid him.

Speaking after the case, Neil’s mum Ann Cruse said she was frustrated over how long the proceedings had taken.

She added: “He [East] pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial, but we had been in court several times before that.

“It has been a complete and utter nightmare – especially as we have seen him driving coaches in Corby on occasions since Neil died.

“Everyone makes mistakes, but he was driving a coach full of children and should have taken extra due care and attention.”

As well as the prison sentence, East was banned from driving for three years.

His defence barrister Maxine Krone said it had been difficult for East to accept that the incident had been his fault.
