A thief who targeted a number of businesses in and around Northampton has been jailed for two years.

Wayne Townsend, 35, was arrested by a police handler after being caught by a police dog searching an office at Carlsberg in March this year.

Townsend also admitted two more burglaries in Kingsthorpe and Moulton and was given three two-year sentences when he appeared at Northampton Crown Court last month.

The sentences will run concurrently which means Townsend — previously of Jubilee Crescent, Wellingborough — will serve two of the six years in prison. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £149.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing property worth £300 from Briggs & Forrester Ltd in Kingsthorpe and £110 from Kappa Packaging in Moulton Way, during break-ins in February.

Northampton Response Officer, PC Richard Beckett, who led the investigation, said: “We welcome this custodial sentence and hope the imprisonment of Townsend will allow the community of Northampton to feel reassured that the Force is taking a hard stance on prolific offending and fighting crime.

“This was a fantastic result for members of the business community, and we hope they feel safer in the knowledge that a prolific burglar will be off the streets for two years and therefore unable to continue his wave of crime.”
