A boy had to be taken to hospital after he and two others were set upon by a gang of eight in Wellingborough yesterday (Wednesday).

A police spokesman said they were called after the incident at about 1.20pm, when the three victims were attacked by eight other boys.

The spokesman said the incident started in Cambridge Street and ended with a "large fight" in Market Square.

One of eight attackers used a metal pole to repeatedly hit a 14-year-old boy over the head, causing cuts that required several stitches in hospital.

Another 14-year-old boy was left with a split lip.

No descriptions of those involved were available this morning.

A police spokesman said: "A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault and released on bail pending further enquiries."
